After more than 18 years since the first survey, the initiators decided to repeat the 2004/5 survey on language use and knowledge in Valcanale. Parents and teachers of children attending Valcanale elementary schools participated in the survey and answered a questionnaire in the 2022/23 school year. The survey specifically addresses the issue of the development of communicative competence in the Slovene language in the linguistically mixed environment of Valcanale and compares the data collected with that of 18 years ago. The author reveals the interaction of key factors in the development of communicative competence in the formal school environment. She includes the characteristics of the family and surrounding environment and emphasizes the motivation of parents to learn and use Slovene compared to other languages in the valley. Based on the identified communicative needs of the population, it seeks to determine the place of Slovene in the bilingual reality of the valley. A special place in the study is given to evaluating the experience of multilingual education currently introduced in schools in the valley.
