The book presents the results and findings of the research Development of pre-reading and pre-writing skills (emergent literacy) in Slovenian language in domestic environments among children attending kindergartens in Italy with Slovenian as the teaching language, which was performed by SLORI for the strategic project JEZIKLINGUA, falling within the Crossborder cooperation programme Slovenia-Italy 2007-2013. The aim of the research was to study how the familiar and/or emergent literacy develops in children who are being raised in a bilingual environment and how this process is managed and/or considered by parents whose children attend bilingual kindergartens with Slovenian as the teaching language in the Provinces of Gorizia and Trieste or the bilingual kindergarten of San Pietro al Natisone. As a matter of fact, in the last years these kindergartens are attended not only by children from Slovenian speaking families, but also by children from mixed marriages/relationships or families that do not speak Slovenian at all. The monographic publication shows how linguistically different types of families prepare their children to literacy acquisition, which are the reading, colloquial and writing habits within these families and to what extent these elements influence the development of linguistic skills and motivation in the child.

The publication is available in Slovenian language and in Italian language.
