Phonological development of Slovenian preschool children living along the Slovenian-Italian border

Collaborative research project

Project leader: Martina Ozbič
Project implementation period: 2021- 2024

The research project will shed light on the phonological development of children in the Slovenian littoral at the level of words, syllables, phonetics and phonemes, with the publication of a work on the phonological development of preschool children living along the Slovenian-Italian border. In reality, in-depth research on the phonological development of Slovenian preschool children has never been conducted: therefore, we do not know precisely how monolingual or even bilingual phonological development of Slovenian and Slovenian-Italian children of the littoral on the border takes place, nor what are the characteristics, peculiarities, and differences between them. All this poses a big problem for science and the discipline, as there is no comprehensive general framework that serves as a reference for understanding development, support, evaluation, and help in case of problems.

The results of the project will provide tools and data for: (1) the study and analysis of the phonological development of monolingual and bilingual preschoolers living along the border; (2) norms for the phonological development of monolingual and bilingual preschoolers living along the border; (3) understanding the challenges of bilingual development; and (4) insights for support in case of possible phonological delays.
