Common Slovene scientific space: reseach on border ethnically mixed areas

Project participating to the Public announcement of competiton for co-financiation of the activities for the promotion of the Slovenian science abroad for year 2009

Project promoter: Univerza na Primorskem
Project performer: Univerza na Primorskem, Narodna in študijska knjižnica Trst (NŠK), Slovenski raziskovalni inštitut (SLORI), Europäische Akademie Bozen / Accademia Europea di Bolzano (EURAC)
Project implementaion period: 2009

The Project was developed thanks to the initiative of the University of Primorska, which in the last years has been studying the different views of the integration processes on the cross-border and ethnically mixed areas. Among these researches we find also the analysis of the minority communities, of the interethnic relations and of the forms and policies of cross-border communication and cooperation. The project originated from the belief that after the access of Slovenia in the Schengen area, the need to develop such a scientific-research activity is even more urgent and useful.

The objectives of the project were:
1. create a common Slovene scientific space through the interaction between the researchers of the University of Primorska, the Slovene researchers on the other side of the border and the research bodies of the Slovene minority in Italy;
2. promote the Slovene science and knowledge among foreign scientists and experts in Italy, with a stress on the area of the Slovene settlement and in other related, ethnically mixed areas in the neighbouring area;
3. cooperate in the promotion of the achievements of the Slovene researchers in Italy and contribute to the promotion of the Slovene research institutions in Italy.

In the framework of the promotional activities of the project, the SLORI has taken part in two major events:

1) The public presentation and the round table ‘Common Slovene scientific space; difficulties and opportunities for integration’, which took place on 25th September 2009 in the Narodni dom in Trieste. The technical meeting of the researchers of the integration processes in the Slovene-Italian borderland, who operate within the framework of the University of Primorska and of the Slovene research institutes in the Frilui Venezia Giulia region was held in two parts. The introductory part was dedicated to the solemn signing of the cooperation agreements between the University of Primorska (UP) and the Slovene research institute (SLORI) and between the University of Primorska (UP) and the Slovene National library of the Studies (NŠK). Then a round table followed, when the advantages and the deficiencies of the cross-border cooperation at the scientific-research level was underlined. The round table also meditated about new challenges, starting points and development opportunities for the future. The round table saw the participation of: prof. dr. Boštjan Žekš (Minister for the Slovenes in the world), doc. dr. Boris Jesih (state secretary at the Office of the Republic of Slovenia for the Slovenes in the world), prof. dr. Rado Bohinc (head of the UP), prof. dr. Rado Pišot (vice-chancellor for the scientific-research and development work at the UP), prof. dr. Milan Bufon (president of  SLORI), dr. Maja Mezgec (head of SLORI), Milan Pahor (director of the NŠK), prof. dr. Miran Komac (director of the Institute for ethnic studies – INV), prof. Roberto Dapit (University of Udine), prof. Ivan Ver? (University of Trieste).

2) The scientific conference ‘Research of borderlands and ethnically mixed areas: the Primorska and the Southern Tirol regions’ at the European Accademy of Bolzano/Evropska Akademija v Bocnu / Accademia Europea di Bolzano/Europaische Akademie Bozen (EURAC). In this occasion a visit with a working meeting was held among the representatives of the University of Primorska and of the Slovene research institute and the representatives of the EURAC on the theme of the scientific-research cooperation.
