This monograph with title Lipalja vas in njena slovenska govorica (eng. San Leopoldo e la sua parlata slovena) provides a detailed description and a methodological approach to the Slovene language variety spoken in Gailtal by its last speakers living on the outermost northwestern fringe of the area where the Slovene community is present. Up until the beginning of the 20th century the Slovene-speaking population played an important role in the local community. The monograph illustrates the peculiar features of the Slovene language variety spoken in the Laglesie-San Leopoldo village and explains the origin and meaning of various house names. The area’s linguistic landscape is presented through maps and historical documents, as well as transcriptions of oral testimonies of speakers of the local language variety who were born in the 1920s. Thanks to their testimonies we discover the life stories of individuals who barely had a chance to speak their mother tongue in their old age due to a series of complex historical events.
