Distance Learning Survey

Collaborative research project

Project holder: Regional Commission for Slovene Schools, SLORI
Principal investigator: Norina Bogatec
Co-investigator: Dr Maja Melinc Mlekuž
Project duration: 2020–2021

In the 2019/20 school year, SLORI, in collaboration with the Regional Commission for Slovene Schools, conducted a survey on distance learning among teachers, students and parents of children attending kindergartens and Italian schools with Slovene as the language of instruction or bilingual Slovene-Italian instruction. The purpose of the survey was to examine the state of affairs after the introduction of distance learning and to identify possible shortcomings which may occur in distance learning at all levels of schooling.

Respondents were asked to complete an online questionnaire co-designed by Maja Melinc Mlekuž and Tomaž Simčič. The survey was conducted between May and June 2020. The questionnaire was completed by 455 teachers or 80% of the 571 invited, 878 parents or 35% of the 2541 addressed, and 283 students or 30% of the 936 enrolled. The results of the survey were obtained through three separate analyses and a final comparative analysis. The Regional Commission for Slovene Schools submitted all research findings to the respective school administration offices for internal use. The results of the statistical data processing were published on the SLORI website. The author of the study Norina Bogatec, in collaboration with Sara Brezigar and Maja Mezgec, published an article on the implementation of distance learning in primary schools in Slovene scientific journal “Sodobna pedagogika”. The results of the survey were supplemented by an analysis of the views of school principals. This part of the survey was implemented in October and November.  The questionnaire, co-designed by Maja Melinc Mlekuž, was completed by a total of 11 principals out of the 14 invited.
