Triestinian city elites between the 19th and 20th century: the power structure, connections with Italy, the national question

Doctoral dissertation

Project manager: Štefan Čok
Project implementation period: 2012-2016

The topic of the doctoral dissertation regards the power structure in Trieste between the 19th and 20th century. Trieste is a crossroad of populations, cultures, languages, political and art movements, and it has always offered demanding yet fascinating contents to any historian who dealt with it. This is true also for the short period of the Triestinian history that the work deals with. The relations between the Italian and Slovenian community have marked, in good and bad terms, the development of this city. Until 1918, that is until the end of WWI , the relation between Slovenians and Italians were enclosed in the wider context of the Austrian and later Austro-Hungarian empire, guided by the Habsburg dynasty. The work will deal with exactly this period, specifically the second half of the 19th century, when the gradual political, social and economic ascension of Slovenian presence in Trieste was followed by a sharpening of the relations between the various communities. In 2014 and 2015 the dissertation will be prepared and it was successfully defended in december 2015.
